Is the Goal I Want Realistic For Me?

Smart Goal Series: part 4 - Realistic. This series will explore goal setting by breaking down each step of the SMART goal tool.

So far, we’ve covered how to be specific and measurable with our goal setting. Determining what it is we want and how we will know that we’re headed in the direction of achieving our outcome are major keys when setting goals. We’ve covered some checks and balances to make sure that our goal is achievable. Let’s now look at making our goal realistic so that we can achieve our ideal outcome.

Webster’s dictionary defines realistic as “having or showing a sensible and practical idea of what can be achieved or expected.” A goal is realistic when you are willing and able to do the necessary work. Goals that set the bar higher attract more motivational forces than when goals are set low. So, a goal needs to be enough of a challenge that it gets you up in the morning to exercise but not so much of a stretch that the possibility of seeing yourself achieve your goal is impossible.

A goal that is realistic for you will align with the direction you want your life to go. A few questions you might ask yourself to check to ensure your goal is realistic for you are the following:

  • Why is this goal important?

  • Does it seem worthwhile?

  • Is this the right time?

  • Does this match specific needs?

  • Does this goal align with the direction I want my life to go in?

  • Do you have what it takes to achieve this goal?

  • Have you made a decision to take action?

  • Have you made a decision to stay committed to your goal?

Finally, what is another way to know that your goal is realistic for you? You can feel that it is the right balance of challenge and reward for you. You can daydream about achieving your goal and the picture is quite clear and easy for you to see. In fact, you may be able to visualize your goal from start to finish or sit down with a piece of paper and write out the progress of you achieving your goal from beginning to end.

Ultimately, deciding whether or not your goal is realistic comes down to you being transparent with yourself about what it is you want, being willing to do the work, connecting with your goal on a deep level and seeing your goal through to the end.

In gratitude,

William Malcolm
